SIGHT WORDS

Below is a list of the sight words that are included in the Language Arts component of our Preschool curriculum.  This list is an adaptation of several combined word lists and does not reflect any particular school district list either by preference, order or importance.  We teach sight words as an introduction to Kindergarten readiness and are focusing more on process than actual product.  Although some of these words can be sounded out, most cannot.  Therefore, we utilize both phonics and memorization as part of each lesson.  It is important to understand that some children may catch on to memorizing these words more quickly than others.  We cannot stress enough that our goal in teaching sight words is not the mastery of the list.  We are simply exposing our Preschoolers to this curriculum to help give them a jump start on the process that will be used once they enter Kindergarten.

A WORD ABOUT HANDWRITING PRACTICE:

There are two main handwriting styles that are currently being taught in our local public school districts – D’Nealian (slanted) and Block Manuscript (vertical and horizontal).  The trend has leaned more toward Block Manuscript simply because it is more developmentally appropriate for a preschool aged child to learn.

Kids Kare Schools does teach with the Block Manuscript, as we start teaching writing skills as early as 2 years old and continue throughout the preschool years.  The consensus is that Block Manuscript is favored by most of the public schools that Kids Kare serves, however there are some that do teach D’Nealian writing.
